Mother Knows Best

We took mom for her 4 month check up and I was happy and little bit mortified that her blood test showed that she was a lot healthier than me. Her cholesterol, glucose, triglyceride count was a whole lot better. The only thing I have going for me is my blood pressure.

The doctor asked if she got sufficient exercise and I could verify that she went on the treadmill twice a day for 20 minutes. His eyebrows shot up. He admitted he doesn't get enough exercise.

We'd bought the treadmill for her when we moved to Hawaii and she found that walking up the hill with us was too strenuous for her.

It's become part of her daily routine, especially since she felt guilty that we'd spent so much on the machine.

Mom almost never eats fast food and her diet consists heavily of vegetables.

She does the laundry for all of us, 75% of the cooking, 90% of the gardening and cleans her area several times a week. She's out early in the morning watering her plants, weeding and raking up fallen leaves.

When we first moved to Hawaii, we tried to take over many of those duties which only upset her. She said she needed to keep moving, thinking and being useful. Well... I guess she knew best.

The problem is... I think she's spoiled us.

  1. And it has made her healthy and vigorous! Kudos to Mom for spoiling you so much. I'm waiting for my own cholesterol results, but then again, I take a statin for it. :-)

  5. Sounds great to me.I think in order to stay active at 80, we need to exercise as much as possible. Your mom is smart! I don't imagine she's 80 though!

    1. Actually you'd win at arm wrestling. We just took her in to the doctor again because of some severe pain in her left arm. The doctor said she should just continue with Salonpas and Tylenol. Funny thing is Dennis and I have pain in our left arm too. Ah well... We shall all ganbarimasu.

  13. That's quite a problem. somebody is beating you! Your Mom is right. You've got to keep moving. As one of my friends said about her husband...if he didn't keep moving, she'd have to dust him!

  14. What a wonderful problem - being spoiled. If you don't want to be spoiled, please send your mom to live with me.

  15. You are very blessed...I was shocked to read your mom's age. My mom is 88 now and recently has lost the ability to get up to feet from a sitting position (she sits Japanese style on the floor) and is very unsteady on her feet. This happened all within two weeks, she was fine one day and the next nope. She also keeps falling, her sense of balance is off. She use to go to the Y twice a week for their senior sit and fit and would walk the 4 long blocks to it. Now she takes forever to get outta bed. Her blood work all came out good (yes, better than mines) I say let her do as much as she can while she can...once they slow or stop their muscles atrophy quickly. BB

    1. Oh no... I'm so sorry about your mom. I worry about my mom too. Even though her blood work is good, her blood pressure is not. Since her mother and sister died so very suddenly, I'm always worried it will shock us that way too. I'm dreading it. She says that passing on the way they did is a blessing. I told her it was great for them but awful for the rest of us since it took us by such surprise that we weren't prepared for it. But yes, we're encouraging her to be as active as she can. Art makes sure she has varied experiences and we told her we'd take her to Kauai this summer.

Mom said today that during the war, she thought she'd die young for sure. Little did she know that she would be so happy in her old age. It made Art and I glad to hear it.

  16. Good for your mom. I understand that need to stay active!
If I had someone doing all those things here that she does, I would have nothing left to do!
