I remember summer as being a wonderful time to open our windows in Illinois. It was terrific to feel the cool night air in the evening.
However, there were skunks in the area and sometimes the scent would wake me up and I'd go around calling, "Skunk!" so we could all quickly move to close our windows.
One morning while visiting our daughter in August, Art got up early and looked out the kitchen window while having breakfast to see this unwelcome sight.
I wish Art could have a taken a better photo, but he really didn't want to go outside to take a closer shot. It appears the skunk has made a home under the deck. Arrghh!
We talked to one of our neighbors and he mentioned using this Beatunes solar powered ultrasonic animal repellent that he said worked great to deter raccoons and skunks.
I have no idea if it actually works. I wonder if my daughter bought it.
Unfortunately, I looked it up and it also repels birds and dogs. There are two dogs next door that my granddaughter loves so I don't know if it would bother them.
Have you ever had problems with skunks?
In Vancouver, my daughter lived in a high rise, with a family of skunks dwelling almost right outside the front door. They seemed to all get along. I guess they were all habituated to each other.
ReplyDeleteyes we have skunks and they plus the local raccoons love to eat our peaches when they are ripe. In the past they were trapped and released elsewhere by the city but they don't offer that service anymore. hubby tried to safeguard our little peach tree by wrapping it in netting but the varmints just climbed up the net and broke off some branches-they won!

ReplyDeleteNo problem with skunks - raccoons, ground hogs, deer. We had all of those when we lived in the woods. No more on the 11th floor.
We have skunks around here, but they don't cause a problem. I saw one that I thought at first was a cat, but it didn't spray us so we left it alone and it did the same. Good luck getting rid of it, though! :-)

ReplyDeleteThat’s a healthy looking skunk, yes we have them, a nuisance, they like to hole up in someone’s yard that has nothing that will disturb them, if there is no pet coming in and out of your home they know they won’t be disturbed setting up residence under your porch lol, our neighbor closed off access under his porch and it solved his problem, we always had pets so no skunks chose our yard as home thank goodness, they might straggle through for a visit but no squatters lol

ReplyDeleteWe have a regular skunk visitor, but she doesn't bother us at all. Hooper chased her down the driveway once.
ReplyDeleteFor the most art skunks mind their won business. If they tangle with something or somebody it can get rank. What happens with injured skunks? My friend is an animal rescuer and she just picks them up. She comes out and gets the skunk out from under the deck. She's only had one accident!
ReplyDeleteI occasionally encountered a skunk, returning from work in the early hours. Thank goodness I always saw them first.

ReplyDeleteFortunately we do not have skunks here in our suburbs, just squirrels and raccoons and moles and opossums, oh, and coyotes sometimes, and a bear once.
ReplyDeleteI haven’t had skunks except for one that came in our yard and our dog attacked it. You can well imagine the outcome of that. However, our next door neighbors discovered a skunk had taken up housekeeping in the crawl space under their house where it birthed a litter of little skunks. They phoned Animal Control who came out and got the creatures. Am not sure what they did — May have had some sort of cage with a food lure and/or were able to block the hole under the house after the mother took the little ones on an outing. Understand they can make good pets — after a little surgery so no accidents.
ReplyDeleteI rescued a pet skunk once.He had been de-skunked but he still smelled a bit. Also had a family of civet cats under my barn. They are a smaller and much cuter version but still smell. We just kept a respectable distance from eachother. You can catch them in a Havaheart trap but you need to throw a rug over the trap so they can't spray you to relocate them. I'd try the repellent first.
