Dinner at Our House

After all the holiday feasting and lack of exercise, I was surprised that I hadn't gained any weight.

As we ate dinner tonight I realized that it's probably due to the meals we usually eat. I was also eating smaller portions while I was ill before December.

Art is thinner than the rest of us because of all his running. He also limits the unhealthy calories that's sometimes before him. I don't know how he does it. I can waggle a blueberry pie in front of him, but he'll just eat one slice. If he eats two, he'll run extra long the next day.

I don't run, but I'm trying to walk again and I've got the stairs that I do climb every day whether I like it or not.

My mother makes miso soup almost every night and likes to stir fry pak choy or choi sum. We eat brown rice and more than half our meal is usually some kind of vegetable. Tofu cubes in soy sauce and grated ginger is very tasty and provides lots of protein. Art stir fried the sardines and sweet onions in a teriyaki sauce which my mom loves.

Notice I'm not counting the two (or was it three?) cubes of truffles I had or the fruit smoothie I made for dessert. I'll try to walk a few more feet tomorrow.

  1. Your diet sounds very healthy. A little of what you fancy - in the form of truffles or smoothies - does no harm in the long run;-)

  2. But Kay, did you count all the running around you do in preparation for hosting all your big family holiday meals?

Yum, wish I could join you at the table in this photo.

  3. It all sounds awesome....except for the sardines. I'm trying to incorporate more whole grains, fruit, and vegetables into my diet. So far, so good.

  4. I'd walk a few feet for a truffle too :) It sounds like you do usually eat a very healthy (and yummy) diet. I would love everything but the sardines.

  6. Yes, I can't imagine you gaining weight, you're so busy, but I used to be told I'd never gain weight, so you never know what circumstances will do to you.
I do know, however, you and Art are as slim as can be, and two of the most energetic, active, healthy people I know. A truffle or two won't hurt you, and fruit smoothies are good for you.

  7. Oh, it's so hard isn't it, to be careful about what one eats all of the time. We eat pretty healthily, never eat desserts, but I do like the odd chocolate or two. I try to say that I'll only have chocolate at the weekend, but that's so difficult to maintain especially when I know there's some in the house. I need to get out and walk more, but perhaps not when the weather's as ghastly as it is at the moment.

  8. One look at that meal and what you wrote adequately explains why you stay trim Kay. Very healthy, especially the Miso soup.

  9. Watch out for the sugar in teriyaki sauce!

I am supposed to go in for my semi-annual blood tests soon. Hope my cholesterol and glucose are okay.

I don't envy your stairs. That's one thing I told David I didn't want when we were house hunting 20 years ago!

  10. I am impressed by your meal. I would be much more trim if I would just follow your meal plans.

  11. Sounds familiar. At this age it has to become a way of life. I work on it every day. If I can just maintain my weight until spring I'll be happy. Once spring is here I'll work on losing more.

  12. I'm working on portion control. I have a big appetite and love to eat, but I'm very strict with myself these days about snacks. I've also started taking a small sandwich and a piece of fruit with me when I'm out and about instead of eating in restaurants.
You are to be congratulated on staying slim in these fattening times.

  13. I keep a container of mixed nuts always available at home to snack on if I'm feeling a bit peckish. It works for me. :-)

  15. Great looking food Kay. I am a big fan of Tofu and will try the ginger and soy sauce next time I eat it.

  16. Your meals are so foreign to me, not at all the way we eat, and yet, we do also eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. It makes me think again of how much our diets are part of our culture, going way back to the ancient homelands and the foods that were available then and there.

  17. Kay, it is so hard to be good isn't it! I am trying so hard this year to eat more fruit and veggies. So far so good!

  19. Hi Kay,
Many thanks for finding my blog and leaving comments on it! I really appreciate it.
Your meal looks so healthy and I am impressed at your habit of exercising!
I guess drinking half a glass of wine would be one of the elements that keeps you away from doctors!
Although I am not into exercise, I am still fit, thanks to my genetic background! But I should be more conscious about it.
    Have a wonderful day.

  21. My husband and mother love to eat natto with negi. I am not a fan of that. I guess I don't like the smell and sliminess. They love it though and say it's very healthy for you. ;-)
