A New Bedroom

When we moved to Illinois 37 years ago, some new friends offered a connection (interior designer) to get us furniture at very, very reasonable prices. We had several styles to choose from and this was the most simple, traditional furniture we could get. We were very grateful because in those days we had only one paycheck.

We may not have cared a whole bunch for the furniture and we added some mismatched pieces, but we were happy there. The kids used to crowd us on the bed and look out the windows at the tall trees in the backyard.

If you compare photos you'll see that we only brought over the reading light and cedar chest from our Illinois bedroom.

When we got to Hawaii, my son said, "Make your bedroom exactly what you want this time. DON'T get it on Craigslist. Get things that match. You've saved your whole life. It's time to enjoy some things."

It did take some doing to get just what we wanted. All the furniture pieces finally arrived after several months. I stood back to look at it and had to smile. It's just what we wanted. We love it.

The only thing missing is our kids.

  6. It looks super, Kay. I'm very happy for you and Art, although, as Dina said, you do sound wistful about the kids. Well, KC was there for a while and I'm sure she'll be back!

  7. It's very nice, but furniture is just furniture. It's the warmth of family that makes a home.

  8. Gigi: Actually, I used that PhotoShop Photomerge device and combined photos to get a panoramic of our bedroom now and it made it look larger because of the fish eye effect.

  9. It looks like you have it pulled together very nicely, just waiting to get a little messed up by some grandkid play.

  12. I love the simple lines of your new bedroom furniture. The style looks very much "Shaker-ish." Is it?

  13. Jean: Yes, I do believe it had that as a description on the pamphlet. We wanted something with very simple "zen like" lines. We've always been partial to the Shaker style.

  17. Well Kay, if your kids both came and crowded into the bed now, bringing their mates and kids, the experience would still probably fall short of your dreams. ;)

Your bedroom looks like a relaxing haven -- which is exactly what I think a bedroom should be.

  19. Your son gave you very good advice. I'm so glad you followed it. Being back in Hawaii is a new start for you, and if you can't have your kids there, you might just as well have your home the way you want it.

  22. Your bedroom looks beautiful! Interesting how we have to give up some things to get others. Wish it didn't have to be like that.
