Archiving Photos for your Family

Red of Hiawatha House in Canada wrote about scanning old photos for archival purposes and it reminded me of a post I wrote in 2011 when I was working on writing about my mother's family's story. My techie savvy brother showed me how I can embed information about important photos with each image.

If you have Windows you can right click on your photo and open the menu, then click on Properties. After Properties, click on Details. From Details you can write information about your photo by clicking on Comments.

I've found this very helpful in recalling why I took a certain photo.

I'm sure you can do this on the Apple photos, but I haven't learned how. I really need to take that Apple class.

POSTSCRIPT:

I forgot to mention that if you have your photo viewer set up with a Details pane on the side of your viewer, you can see where you're able to add information just by selecting your photo and then adding the info on the side bar.

  1. I never knew you could do that

  2. I will have to look up how to do that, Kay, on my Mac with the Photos app. I take so many that often the only thing I do is label it. :-)

  3. I didn't know that either. Thanks!

  4. The handy Properties tab! And you get to see how large your photo is (in pixels), too! What a great idea to add in names and information!

  5. Or go back to Windows. LOL Yes, that's a wonderful trip. I shall try it on some of my mother's old pictures. Thanks.

  6. I tried it and it worked. Thanks. Only I have many of the photo's details, and it was a pleasure to add to the details page.

  8. Oh no. Now that I know this, I may have to go back and add info to the photos I am sorting. I may never get done!
    Thank you??

  9. Well, you learn something every day lol I will try this with some of the 'old' photos I've scanned while I remember all the details. Do you know if I was to email this photo to someone else would they be able to see the information?

    1. I would think the information would still be embedded with the photo. Try experimenting first. You need to be sure to tell the recipient how to see the information. They need to know they have to right click on the photo. If your computer is set up to view photos with a Details pane, you can already see where you can embed the information or if there is already something there.

  10. Kay, great idea, but it looks like a lot of work, for which I would not have the time or patience at the moment. Maybe next year?

  11. It actually looks like a fun project, and I might consider taking it up, providing a set of photos for each grandchild.

  12. Thanks for the info. I finally go the hang of Picasa, but I'm going to try this one. It's surprising what's hiding out there. There's a lot we don't know.

  13. You do have to be careful that you don't embed your location. That can be a dangerous thing.

    1. I only do this on the photos I want to archive for personal use. I have turned off the location services on my iPhone and iPad cameras so they don't record the locations. I haven't checked my regular camera, but I don't think it has that feature.

    1. Did you right click over your photo and scroll all the way down to properties?

I really LOVE hearing from you! However, if you sign in as ANONYMOUS, please don't forget to tell me who you are in the comment box by just writing your first name. We would all appreciate it if you kept your comment respectful and kind.

I’m using Comment Moderation for any post that is more than a day old because of aggravating SPAM. Therefore, if your comment does not go up on an older (more than a day old) post, it's because I need to OK it first. I'm sorry to have to do this, but again... sigh... it's the spam that's driving me crazy.
