October 1st, Monday:
There was a time Art just loved planting trees. Well... actually he still loves planting trees. Unfortunately, they have a habit of growing too big.
The day before, it was the cherry tree.
Today however, Tif was worried that the 30 foot apple tree was leaning toward the house and reaching toward the neighbor's power lines.
"NO way!" I told Art. "That tree is too huge! Look at the trunk diameter. We cannot take down that tree."
(Art measured the diameter later at 9 inches.)
Did I mention that this was supposed to be a miniature too?
Did I also mention that Art likes a challenge and it's never a good idea to tell him he can't do something?
The backyard was soon getting full of branch bundles.
I had to guide the branch toward our yard so it wouldn't pull down the neighbor's power lines.
We eventually got most of the lower branches cut and bundled.
We couldn't find the large ax we used to have so we had to use this hatchet, but Art was determined.
Our neighbor was watching our progress and brought over his chain saw for us to use.
Unfortunately, the chain saw wouldn't work properly.
It was afternoon by the time we got the roots cut so we could pull the tree down. Our neighbor and Tif's handyman who was working on renovating their bathroom came to help pull.
I could not believe we actually did it!
We kept a bunch of the apple logs for our friends who said they were great for the fireplace and grilling.
Needless to say we had a lot of landscape bundles for fall pick-up a few days later.
We slept well that night!

Art is a gem. He can do anything, it seems. And nice fireplace logs, too! :-)
ReplyDeleteI bet you did sleep well! wow! Big job
ReplyDeleteWe slept extremely well!
DeleteThe yard is looking bigger every day.
ReplyDeleteImpressive!
ReplyDeleteI have a list of chores at my place, too. Come stay with me for a month! Free incessant barbeque in Kansas City! Glad you stayed safe. DrumMajor
ReplyDeletegreat job! We're not allowed to cut mature trees down anymore without getting permission from the city, if you have a good reason or concern.
ReplyDeleteReally? Even in your own backyard?
DeleteGood for Art, I like a man who won't be beaten by a challenge. Christopher cut down a huge cherry tree in our garden last year and it's made such a difference to the view from our lounge window. What are 'landscape bundles for fall pick-up'?
ReplyDeleteAll branches and limbs have to be cut into 5 foot lengths and bundled with ropes to be picked up by the village maintenance crew. We had a mountain of the cherry and apple branch bundles.
DeleteOh my goodness, that Art is indeed a man with a mission. He'll tackle anything.
ReplyDeletethat's what you call a working vacation...lol! don't plant any more trees.
ReplyDeleteGood grief you guys work hard. But apple wood smells so nice in the fireplace. Dianne
ReplyDeleteAny fruit wood is great in a fireplace. Mix it with some pine wood, and you get not only snap and crackle but great aroma. My old outfit, the U.S. Forest Service, hires tree fellers. I'll tell them about you. But, don't hold your breath! Cheers.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that apple wood had a different kind of aroma. I wish I could smell it. Maybe we should have kept some of the cherry wood too.
ReplyDeleteAmazing....I wonder which is harder to cut down, mango or apple/cherry tree?
ReplyDeleteL...w
Seems to me the mango would win out if it's mature. We would never attempt a mature mango tree! Art would still love to plant one though. Sigh.....
DeleteI can't even believe you took that project on. Wow. What an accomplishment.
ReplyDeleteThat's a lot of work to do with hand tools! I guess that's why we have a chain saw, a chipper, and a fireplace!
ReplyDeleteI see Tiffany got plenty of work out of her dad. I think he deserved the back massage.
Art must be strong like an ox using hatchet.
