We were expecting our son, Jon to arrive on Friday evening from Baltimore where he is attending grad school at Johns Hopkins. It had been about five years since he'd seen his childhood home and neighborhood.
He'd also not seen the changes that had taken place since Tiffany and Ed had bought the place from us.
Tiffany worried that he might not care for the changes she had made. She need not have worried.
Jon was fine. He was happy to see his niece in his old room.
KC had been waiting impatiently for her Uncle Jonny to arrive.
Whereas she was shy when she was younger, now KC pulled Jon along and begged him to play with her.
On Saturday morning, she had fun showing him how to deflate his air mattress in the family/play room.
I was really proud of Jon for the attention and caring he showed KC. Someday... he will make a wonderful father himself.
I was amazed at how quickly KC became attached to him.
We had a huge brunch at Walker Brothers Pancake House which is very popular in Chicago. The line to enter wrapped around the building.
Once inside we laughed to see KC carefully rearrange the dolls in the display. She is certainly her mother's daughter!
We then went to KC's school playground where she showed Uncle Jonny her favorite swings.
KC has heard all the tales of Uncle Jonny's many childhood accidents.

Jon had the famous Walker Brothers apple pancake. He and Art thought they'd be able to finish it, but ended up eating only half which happily meant left-overs.
We then went to KC's school playground where she showed Uncle Jonny her favorite swings.

Tiffany and Jon went to this very same school. I'm sure it brought back many memories for them.
In the evening, Tiffany, Ed and KC had a wedding that they had to attend.
We cherished the time we could have our son to ourselves and went to a Japanese restaurant called Renga Tei.
After Tiffany and family returned, we stayed up late into the night trying to savor every minute we could with Jon. Tomorrow would be here too soon and Jon would have to leave.

Another great post Kay! You are such a loving family.
ReplyDeleteoh my gosh, Kay this brought tears to my eyes this morning, happy tears. you have such a wonderful bond in your family, that was a lovely day.
ReplyDeleteThis was just wonderful. It's great when all the little "chicks" are together. I loved KC and her Uncle Jon! Awwwww....
ReplyDeleteThose great family relationships are so important not only to the little ones, but to the older ones too. I like to see how the little ones thrive with so much attention from grownups. Their excitement and enthusiasm are contagious. Jon will make a good daddy some day which means he had good parents who set a great role model for him.
ReplyDeleteWonderful times together.
ReplyDeleteIs there a mattress long enough for Big John?
What a wonderful time you had together, and Jon is a son to be proud of. You and Art are obviously a very good role model for how to be happily married. :-)
ReplyDeleteMore precious times, thanks so much for sharing!
ReplyDeletewow, those are some huge pancakes.
ReplyDeleteNO kidding!
Deleteprecious moments when the whole family is together are rare...
ReplyDeleteYour joy in this brief time you got to have all your family together is so evident throughout this post. What a great time for all of you and it does seem like it was a special bonding time for Jon and KC.
ReplyDeleteOh, precious moments indeed, Kay!! My family is so scattered over the country that those times we all have together are rare and precious indeed!! I'm so looking forward to Christmas this year when three of the four plus my daughter-in-law, her sister and mother will all celebrate together! Enjoy the moment! Fun to see Jon and KC having such fun!
ReplyDeleteWe all loved seeing how much fun KC had with Jon. She'd been talking about him before he came and was so excited to see him. You're right! These moments are so very precious! You are going to have an awesome Christmas, Sylvia!
DeleteGlad Jon got to escape from his studies to visit. That's nice to still have the original house in the family. I thought the pancakes were a plate of cinnamon rolls! Jon knows his sister well: he didn't stay long enough to be "volunteered" for the list of chores! Just kidding. Glad you had fun. DrumMajor
ReplyDeleteWe COULD have used his help with all that tree cutting!
DeleteIf I ate like Jon I would be big as a house. The kids look so happy, who could ask for anything more. Love it. Dianne
ReplyDeleteHe keeps himself so busy with studies, soccer, mountain climbing, etc. that he's somehow managed to burn all those calories and is quite thin.
DeleteJon is such a handsome man -- and smart, too. Glad you all had such a great family reunion.
ReplyDeleteAwww... thank you, gigi. You know a mother never tires of hearing this.
DeleteI said Awww from beginning to end. Wonderful visit. Wonderful family.
ReplyDeleteI also thought Jon was eating cinnamon rolls!
ReplyDeleteYou have such a close and caring family, Kay. It is obvious in everyone's face. That kind of happiness can't be faked just because the photographer says, "Say cheese."

If I sold my house to one of my kids, would I be best advised to go for market price or to give them a break? This is a real question I might face in about five years or even sooner, if hurricanes keep hitting on the Mainland. My daughter has had two natural disasters in two years and she's weary and sounded fed up the last time I spoke to her. Don't answer this if you don't want to.
ReplyDeleteI'm not great with finances, but we did give them a break. Then the housing market fell into the basement and it wasn't such a great break after all.
DeleteIt's so wonderful that your house is still a family home, and that you could all be together there.
ReplyDeleteJon reminds me of my Jake, and how much Irene and Isaac love him. So sweet.
We do have so many things in common, Linda.
DeleteAwww...it's nice when everyone gets along.

You & Art are blessed to have such a great family.
ReplyDeleteYou have a beautiful family Kay. And Jon is a very handsome young man. I hope you all get to spend more time together soon. It is great catching up with our kids. I am about to do the same with my daughter in a couple of weeks.
