For about 10 minutes I thought about waking up before the sun was up to go out to the malls for Black Friday. Art was not excited. We don't even know what we need to buy.
Instead, I decided (with Art's encouragement) that I needed to go to Zumba first and get some exercise after all the calories I ate on Thanksgiving.
After Zumba, we were able to get ourselves to Office Depot to buy these 16 GB flash drives for $7.99. It was actually Sandisk that was on sale, but they were all out. The Lexars were still there and I liked the look of it so we bought it.
We then tried to get to the mall, but would you believe the traffic jam to get into the parking lot at 10:00 AM was so bad we went right home and had a turkey left-over lunch?
Then we headed out again to Home Depot and bought some lumber we needed for another home project and...
new toilet seats since the plastic screw things on the ones we have are already breaking after 5 years. We found the Bemis brand at Home Depot, but decided to check out toilet seats at Lowes also and found something that would work well. This brand was called Church. We bought one of each so we could compare them.
After installing the two toilet seats in our master bedroom and the guest bedroom, Art checked where they were made. Sheboygan, Wisconsin! It was our neighbor to the north when we lived in Illinois. Then he checked the addresses. What the heck! They were the same. Both toilet seats were made by the same company.
Well, they are both great! Sturdy and secure with the promise that they won't come loose. Since the hinges are metal, I hope they won't snap off like the other one with plastic bolts we had. As for rust... we'll see.
As a reward for all our hard work, we shared some shave ice from our favorite Mountain Magic Shave Ice Stand outside of Sports Authority in Waikele.
It started to rain... HARD! This is very unusual for this part of the island.
Then there was lightning!
Seriously?
And thunder?
Come on....
As we headed home, we saw sheets of rain, flashes of lightning and rumbling thunder around us. Incredible! It was almost like being back in the Midwest. Sort of...
There was a long wait in traffic. When we got home mom said she'd heard that there was hail reported also and that the highway was flooded. That's what caused the traffic snarl. In the evening news they talked about funnel clouds! Are you kidding?
Our Black Friday turned out darker than we anticipated but we managed to get a few buys that we needed. I think we'll wait a while to go shopping again.
Did you buy anything?

We went to the movies and saw "The Life if Pi." I enjoyed it immensely and will post about it on my Eye on the Edge blog tomorrow, along with other stuff. if you see it, I'm interested in what you think.
ReplyDeleteI've told Art we need to go see it. We'll take mom next week sometime. I'm thinking dialogue won't be a problem for her. We won't take her to see Lincoln though since dialogue is so important in it.
DeleteA Church toilet seat?? That's a funny name.
ReplyDeleteWow, that's an impressive sky photo. So you think the climate is going mad?
I was spared having to go shopping. In Israel we have neither Thanksgiving nor Black Friday nor Christmas, so no pressure to go out and gift shop right now.
Well I didn't buy toilet seats! It is a curious thing that you wear out toilet seats every five years. lol I did my Black Friday shopping online. With the storms you had a very authentic Black Friday.
ReplyDeletethats interesting about the toilet seats, imagine that, you have a wonderful life on that beautiful island, even shopping trips are an adventure!
ReplyDeleteSounds like the perfect Black Friday! Well, except for the rain.
ReplyDeleteNope, we did not shop on Black Friday. Hate the crowds and really don't need anything new.
ReplyDeleteYou did the right kind of shopping for Black Friday.....lumber and toilet seats at Lowes and Home Depot are probably not where the big crowds are. :)
ReplyDeleteTyping on my kindle fire so forgive all the typos....what's weird is sometimes it won't let you type the way you spell it...eg. online
ReplyDeleteBut right now it does...hmmmm...oops turn to loops...lol turns to loo
Anyway no Black Friday fighting the crowds for me ....but I did manage to buy the Garmin with lifetime maps from Best Buy yesterday. I"be decided to forgo getting the iphone for now. No one buys gps nowadays so of course there was a lot left.

hmmm...why do I have a problem with speech. I meant yesterday errr....

ok one more time...I think I'm not of sane mind. The Black Friday I was talking about yesterday happened Thursday evening....on Friday I went to Best Buy and it was not at store opening but much later like 9 hours after opening so while crowded not the insane store opening crowds. Husband was at Walmart trying to get the GPS on Thursday evening while I stood at Target and he said he couldn't believe what he saw....and wished he took a video.

No kidding? At least you got in. We couldn't even get into Pearlridge. The traffic was backed up from both ends. It was craaaazy!
DeleteI just wrote a post about our Hewlett-Packard monitor dying AGAIN. We've decided to buy another one online. I'm too tired to brave crowds.
It's time to go see a movie or something.
we drove home on black friday and enjoyed little traffic on the interstate until we got to our town then the cars were backed up to go to the stores...we had a nice Mexican dinner and drove home to peace and quiet although I brought a sore throat home-a gift from a sick grandson!
ReplyDeleteWonder where the noisy storm came from? But you have to have rain for the pretty flowers everywhere.
ReplyDeleteMy Wal-Mart is open 24 hours, and I hate crowds, so I got a couple of things on Thanksgiving afternoon, like my new grandcat's extra tiny bed. Stacks were in the aisles for scanning only after 10 p.m. Five area Wal-Mart's had workers protesting out front on Friday; and 2 people were shot over a parking space in Florida.
Since I like to find unique stuff, I've done most of my shopping via Internet, including REAL Kona coffee from Hawaii, and now my daughter-in-law is addicted to mac nuts after their honeymoon in Hawaii.
I've given my son tree ornaments reflecting what occured that year. Did you know you can even get a sting ray Christmas ornament from www.ornamentshop.com? (They went swimming with the manta rays on the Big Island?)
I've noticed the newer toilet seats are wimpier. The resting pads between the sections pop off too. You can get just replacement plastic bolts and pads. Maybe your new ones are made in the USA because of the squat toilets in other countries?
Can I buy shave ice via the Internet? Aloha, DrumMajor
Actually we found that the replacement toilet seats are sturdier. Hmmm.... Maybe I should wait 5 years before saying this. You just never know in Hawaii.
DeleteI had to laugh about your telling me that it was interesting how I was talking about prunes and now toilet seats. They can be quite connected topics. :-)
Kohler is the best. I bought Italian hardware for my bathroom, and my Aunt from Sheboygan said, "Shoulda bought Kohler." I learned all about the company after that, and grew to love it especially after I developed a research paper on it for my business history grad class. Dianne
ReplyDeleteOur plumber in Hawaii told us to get Delta because we'll be able to get parts easier. They're an OK brand, but we did find that finding parts was a bit easier for us.
DeleteI think you are very brave for going out on Black Friday. I am not a big shopper anyway and so the thought of going out today didn't appeal to me. Two family members did go out and they said it wasn't as crowded in the shops as they thought it would be. Not good for the retailers.
ReplyDeleteRead from KITV that your heavy rain really did have hail in places around you, and a roof partially collapsed on a high school, with winds up to 60 mph! Hope Mom's orchid row didn't get any damage. I had to move leaves from my drive and steps that collected like drifting snow! DrumMajor
ReplyDeleteStayed in my lounge suit all day. Didn't put on makeup. Watched my soap opera which was a repeat from the early 90s (fun), and had fennel salad for dinner since I had made biscuits and gravy for lunch. We need nothing so I'm not going shopping with all the crazies.
ReplyDeleteTerry violated the anti-Black Friday rants of me, his spouse, and bought some gifts for the kids online. We also bought BLT sandwiches and malasadas at Tex Drive In on our way over to Hapuna Beach, where we met friends who were vacationing from Colorado.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't heard about your rough weather over there. We have had strong trades and a lot of rain lately, but still with plenty of sun. Typical Hamakua, ask Art!
I love reading your blog posts! You are a wonderful person.
ReplyDeleteCheers from Cottage Country!
Awww... thank you. That's so kind of you to say.
DeleteWe've stayed home until this evening, when we went to see the movie LINCOLN. It was wonderful! I have to venture out tomorrow to pick up a few groceries. But then I'll go back to baking and beginning Christmas decorating. I hope to get out for a bit of shopping Monday when everyone else goes back to work and school.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a fun day actually without hitting the dreaded MALL! From now till the first of the year I will probably shop online or the Mom&Pop stores, unless I go early, early in the morning while the kiddos are still in school!
ReplyDeleteWow, that storm, it's like living in Oklahoma!!!!! We need that rain so very bad.
I saw flash drives in the sales bin a few weeks ago. Don't remember the brand though.
