When we booked plane tickets for Jon to come and visit with us the first weekend in October, we somehow forgot to check with Tiffany on their schedule. As it turned out, they had a wedding that they had to attend on Saturday and on Sunday, KC had been counting on watching her Auntie Jane run in the Chicago Marathon.
No problem! Jon and Art were happy to observe their first Chicago Marathon. We'd never gone to see it in the 35 years we lived in Illinois.
For one thing, we were always worried about the traffic and parking.
Amazingly, it was also not a problem.
We found a parking garage right away and walked the short distance to the spot where Tif told Jane we would be waiting.
Suddenly there it was! Thousands of runners going past in high spirits. Of course this was only about the 7 mile mark of the 26 + mile Marathon.
Message for my Canadian blogger friends: You were definitely well presented!
We also noticed a large contingent from our neighbors in Mexico.
We quickly got into the excitement of the Marathon and clapped and shouted for everybody. I had the feeling that Art and Jon were wishing they were out there (running) too.
We loved all the costumes that many of the runners wore. There were also tutus and even a Captain Hook (I think).
Can you imagine how hot he'd probably be by the end of the race?
One runner was a sweet older gentleman who was holding Mardi Gras necklaces. He veered toward us and draped a necklace on a thoroughly delighted KC.
There were a lot of volunteer Marathon enforcers who made sure people stayed on the sidewalk.
You can see empty water bottles strewn along the road.
We eventually learned that many runners had their names printed on their shirts so you could call out your encouragement to them. We tried to do this with gusto. This fellow helped us out by running along the road and pointing this sign at a runner.
And then, there she was!
Our wonderful, honorary Auntie Jane who has been a special part of KC's life.
Jane is a doctor and had made up her mind to practice what she preaches about exercise.
This was her first Marathon.
It wasn't easy holding KC back. She wanted to run out into the crowd to greet her "Auntie" and show her the sign she'd worked so hard on.
And then... after a quick high five, she was gone and we left with smiles on our faces and in our hearts.
We then picked up Ed and headed out to an IHOP for breakfast before taking Jon to O'Hare Airport.
Even though I've strongly advised Art to stay with Half-Marathons from now on... I was hearing rumblings of "Wouldn't it be neat to do the Chicago Marathon?"
And then, in the blink of an eye, a wave of a hand... our visit with Jon was over.
Art and I have decided that when he graduates, we will make a trip to Baltimore and spend time on the East coast again.
Then again... maybe we won't wait that long.

I enjoy all your pictures except the last.
ReplyDeletewonderful, Kay.
ReplyDeletethat was a wonderful accomplishment for Jane and its wonderful to see the whole family involved,
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures! I love the whole idea of the camaraderie that develops over these events. And the costumes are great! Congratulations to Jane on her marathon! :-)
ReplyDeleteWhat a busy visit! I'm still processing that you didn't run the Chicago marathon the entire time you lived there. KC certainly has her days packed with fun when you and Jon are there! DrumMajor
ReplyDeleteYou know.... Art's first marathon was actually after we moved to Hawaii. It doesn't mean he wouldn't be tempted to still try the Chicago Marathon. I'm still against it though. I want him to stick to Halfs.
DeleteIt's good to see the pictures of the marathon which I hear about from my brother who lives west of the airport. Baltimore is also an interesting place with a great waterfront and aquarium, among other things. It is also near D.C. which has wonderful museums and monuments.
ReplyDeletelovely how things worked out, considering busy schedules.
ReplyDeleteWhat fun and great support for Jane. The last picture was great, but a little bit of a tearjerker.
ReplyDeleteI see many marathons in little KC's future...starting with her exuberance cheering Auntie Jane! Lovely family reunion!!
ReplyDeleteL...w
Actually, KC has already been in her first race and was very proud of her huge medal.
DeleteHow exciting. I've cheered on one marathon, but years ago. I was young enough to climb on top of a wall to see the runners. A good visit to cheer for, too.
ReplyDeleteSounds fun - but a shame Jon's visit was short.
ReplyDeleteBeing a "tourist" in your old home town is providing you with some new experiences.
ReplyDeleteMaybe KC will turn out to be a marathoner. She has a great example, several actually.
THANKS again for your support & spending your precious family time on a chilly Sunday just to cheer for me - the first 7 miles was a breeze knowing you guys would be there, especially my BFF with her awesome sign!! My only regret is not giving her a proper hug & kiss when I waddled on by. I really should have! Thanks for this blog post - these are memories I will cherish forever! :). JB
ReplyDeleteJane, you are an inspiration for all of us. Glad to hear you and Tiffany had fun at the 5K this morning. Tif texted me the photo of all of you. Looked cold in Chicago, but the hot chocolate at the end sure sweetened the race.
DeleteFirst, good on Jane and well done. How interesting all those costumes are. What fun. That photo of KC waving to Jon is adorable. Glad you had a visit with him no matter how short.
ReplyDeletenew places to visit...hurrah! more races to run?
ReplyDeleteSigh.... I'm afraid so.
DeleteIt's so nice to see this slice of your family life. Keep it up.
ReplyDeleteWoooow! I can't believe you're able to keep up with your blogging while you're on a trip. You're amazing!
DeleteWow, that is quite an event. I loved how colorful it all was. I had no idea they all wore such colorful outfits. I bet you were thrilled to see both kids.
ReplyDeleteA GREAT time was had by all! How sweet KC is cheering on her friend. I love it.
