Battle of the Birds: Orchid Cage

A couple of weeks ago, Mom came into the house shouting for us.  I thought she might have hurt herself or had gotten horrible news from the neighbors.

It was the birds.  She was sure it was a bulbul who'd done it.  The bird had snapped off a huge bud from the orchid plant she'd been nurturing and looking forward to watching bloom.

My brother, Dennis had made these orchid stands for Mom to raise her orchids several years ago.  Mom says the bulbuls like to bite the buds off, but don't actually eat them.

I told Dennis his mother was very upset about the orchids and he would need to do something.  Art was busy working on the handrails at the time.

We could see that several of her plants were showing signs of budding so something needed to be done.

Art and I went to Home Depot and bought a big roll of plastic bird netting.

It was not easy to work with netting material that kept tangling but Dennis managed to  figure out a way to keep the birds out but allow Mom to water and fertilize them.

Dennis did just one set of the stands and we'll let that be the nursery.

In a few days these buds should bloom and I imagine we'll have a very happy mother on our hands.  I hope.

  2. You have the most talented family! Your mother grows orchids, Art can build anything, and Dennis can make things to keep his family happy! Very talented indeed. :-)

  3. She is one of the few people I've heard of who can get their orchids to bloom. What a great solution to the problem, it looks attractive too. How does your mom access the orchids now?

  6. I hope you take pictures of the orchids when they bloom. I love orchids, but they are so difficult to grow. Hope the netting does the trick, by golly!

    1. I just posted a photo. The amazing thing is that there's another bunch in the same pot ready to bloom in another couple of days too.

  7. How large are bulbul's? I have an image on them bouncing off the net. Little buggers.

  8. Wow! Beautiful orchid! I'm glad your brother put up the netting. My orchids have been vacationing on the front porch all summer. They love it out there. I always hate to bring them back inside, but when danger of frost arrives, I have to.

  9. Birds, birds, BIRDS. I love the little critters. Been an ornithologist/birder since small kid time with Grandma. BUT.... They sure can be pests. I've already written for this blog how 17, count 'em, SEVENTEEN garbage bags of Java Finch nests were removed from my old house before I sold it. Well, just this month, I had two basketball-size nests removed from my attic and the holes covered with wire mesh. Same culprit: the pretty, but wily, Java Finch. I used to work with a lady who fed the Java Finches at work out of the kindness of her heart. God bless her! But it was like feeding rats. I never told her that.

  10. Quite a professional job there at the end, gents! Really a sweet space for her to make her creative choices and to create. Bulbuls do not produce vitamin C as other birds do, so they are known to eat fruit. . . something they needed there? Hmmmm - get it elsewhere birds!

  12. Kay -- What a wonderful job your Mom did! They should be entered in an orchid show! Love the neat "orchid row" to raise them in, surely another Art and Dennise construction. How long do the flowers stay open on the plant? Maybe you could dry the blooms between paper to save them. I think the blooms are so big and beautiful, that Mom put a tiny bit of sake in the watering can, maybe. Skype a movie of Mom with the blooms to Japan! So pretty! DrumMajor

    1. Mom says this particular type of orchid lasts about a week. It has a delicate fragrance that is lovely too. It would be hard to dry the blooms because there are some thick parts to it. Hmmm... Skyping the orchids, hunh?

  19. Yay!! Your mom must be so pleased with the orchid and having her children assist in her rescue. As a mother, nothing beats my children's love and attention.
