It all still sounds like science fiction to me. We're planning that Skype video call to Japan and now our 5 year old granddaughter is having us do Face Time. I didn't even know what that was exactly.
First our daughter sent us a TEXT photo of KC riding her bike for the first time without training wheels in Illinois. Then a few minutes later, KC proudly called us herself and walked around the house showing us things with her mom's cellphone. She knew how to press on the icon that would turn the camera around to show us what she was referring to. Then she'd press the icon around to turn the camera back so that we could see her face.
When I wasn't sure how to use the Face Time feature, KC said, "See that green button, grandma? Press on that. Now press on the camera so I can see grandpa too."
I could hear Tiffany saying, "Tell grandma you're her tech support like your daddy."
KC actually took us into her Illinois closet so we could see all the new hair clips she'd gotten and the butterfly decals that were now decorating her room.
Then we heard her father calling her and Tiffany telling him that KC was talking to us on the iPhone.
We heard a chuckle then and our son-in-law's voice saying, "Ahhh... the long distance babysitters."

oh my gosh, our grandchildren are so much more savvy to all the new technology than we are, thats a new feature to me! I love it though,
ReplyDeleteMy sister and I use FaceTime, iChat, and occasionally Skype to video chat. We have them all available to us. When she calls me on FaceTime, though, it rings on all three of my devices! It sounds like a convention hall...
ReplyDeleteYou have to be the most wired grandma I know. Dianne
ReplyDeletehow fun, need to use all the opportunities we have to relate to grandchildren far away!
ReplyDeleteYour son in law is the funniest! Love his quips!

He does have a wicked sense of humor actually.
DeleteSuch a brilliant child. :)
ReplyDeleteOur children catch up and overtake us - our grandchildren start way ahead of us.
ReplyDeleteYes Facetime is similar to Skype as I understand it. What a wonderful call!
ReplyDeleteIt's similar in that it's a video call. However, with the cellphone, the video call is portable unlike the Skype on the computer that stays on your desk. Then again if you have Skype on your iPad or whatever... ahhhh.... yes... it's pretty much the same thing.
DeleteLong distance babysitters! I love that. I just hope my 5-year-old grandniece doesn't expect me to do anything like this.

ReplyDeleteWill wonders never cease? It's all way over my head!
How fun is this??? I love your son-in-law's comment. My granddaughter sends me texts that say, "Grandma, do you want to facetime?" I love that when she does this because I know she wants to keep in touch.
ReplyDeleteOh! KC is such a cute and smart kid..you are a proud grandmother..
ReplyDeleteIsn't that wonderful how she knows so much already! I'm glad we live as grandmothers in a time when we can still see our grandkids through technology. Awesome!
ReplyDeleteWonderful!

KC is such a smart kid, very technologically advanced. Maybe she will find a career in computer science?
ReplyDeleteShe really is a chip off the ol' computer block. Since her dad is a computer expert, I guess it's not surprising. Ed even built her a laptop of her own with lots of safety blocks on it.
DeleteToday's grandparents are lucky to have all this technology!
ReplyDeleteMind you, in the days of no technology, children tended not to move away :(
