Where Were You?

Neil Armstrong passed away two days ago.  He was the first person to land on the moon.  His famous words were, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."

We've been hearing a lot about what a very humble hero Mr. Armstrong was.

According to Wikipedia, he was chosen to be the first man to walk on the moon because he was known to not have a big ego.

The newscaster this evening said the historic moment when Mr. Armstrong stepped on the moon is something everybody remembers clearly.  They know where they were and what they were doing.

Art certainly does.  He says he was in the Air Force at the time and stationed in Manchester, New Hampshire.  He didn't have a TV so he had to go to a friend's house to see it.

Weird thing is... I remember watching them pull the lunar module out of the water, but the landing is foggy.  Sheesh!

I do, however remember with startling clarity where I was when President Kennedy and Bobby Kennedy were assassinated.

Do you remember where you were during the moon landing?

  1. I remember it so well. I was at college and we had no television in our lodgings, so a group of us went to watch the moon landings at the home of one of the friends. Her parents were away so we had the run of the house and the larder, so fed ourselves really well for a change, had a few beers and stayed up all night watching the television. Magical.

  5. During the moon landing in 1969, I was in a bank in Bangkok, Thailand, making a transaction. There was a television pointed in my direction and I watched the first step onto the moon. Thrilling! I was so proud to be an American!!!

  6. I do remember it very well. My husband was also in the Air Force and we were in Dayton Ohio. I was pregnant with my first child, my son, who has always had an interest in space exploration.....he now works as a rocket scientist.

  8. Yes, I remember the moon landing well. My son at 49 is about the age of today's astronauts. He, however, was not as influenced by this event as they were. He was not inspired to be an astronaut.

  9. It's a bit fuzzy to tell you the truth but I seem to picture myself sitting in my family's sitting room with them, and their being very excited that all this was going on. Sad about Mr. Armstrong but what a great legacy he left, and an amazing role model to be sure.

  10. We were in YELLOW SPRINGS, OHIO, the finest small town in all of AMERICA, CERTAINLY THE MOST UNUSUAL. Definitely my favorite place where I've lived. Fondly called by its detractors RED Springs for its supposed Communist leanings, actually liberal, but liberal means Communist to the rightwingers. Weird, but today "Red" is used to designate a conservative state. Neil Armstrong was from OHIO also---Wapokaneta, Ohio. I went through there many times. He ended up in Cincinnati, which was our major metropolis (Dayton was the other one, but smaller). I bought a special memento of the moon landing for future generations. Guess what it was? A Super Eight movie of the landing in color. Future generations will hardly know what to do with it. I have it somewhere around the house.

  11. My kids and I were on Bravo Pier when the Apollo 11 crew came home to Honolulu on the Hornet. I knew it was a moment in history, and I took a couple of photos with my little camera. You can see the guys waving from the white trailer as the derrick lifted it off the deck of the Hornet. Not very good photos, but the kids have a memory of that historic moment. Dianne

PS as for the moon landing itself, I saw it on TV like almost everyone else.

  13. Thank you! We'll never forget the times, but I too am hazy on where I was at the moment. Kennedy's assassination? elementary school - teachers were crying. I'll never forget THAT!

I do remember Wilson Pickett on the tonight show that day....

    1. I was a freshman in high school when President Kennedy was shot. I remember the teacher stopping math class and asking for a radio. Everybody was in shock.

  14. I was in New Jersey and quite distracted at the time, with a young child and the war on. Of course it was a big deal, but the Vietnam War was such a worry.

  16. I was at the old cabin on Whidbey Island. We were newly weds, and we were there with Tom's family. We brought our old portable black and white TV with rabbit ears so we could watch the landing. I remember we were almost holding our breath, hoping it would actually work. Later we looked up at the moon, knowing that there really was a man in/on the moon.

  17. Gee I can't remember that summer of 69 too well. It was an awkward time going from intermediate to high school. I do remember seeing it on TV over and over again. I was probably at home sewing my dresses for the new school year. All I remember was sewing a lot that summer. Today, everyone is spoiled with ready to wear soooo cheap.

    1. Gosh! Me too! I sewed all my clothes until college. It's amazing to think of it now. It's now cheaper to buy ready made clothes than to sew your own.
