Scanning Slides

OK... I'm pretty much, any day now, almost done with scanning family photographs unless another album surfaces so I'm on to slides.  There were TWO big boxes of them in my closet.

I didn't take slide photos, but Art did...a lot!

I tried to organize them by years and then I labeled the boxes.

I found that most of the slides had dust particles or mold like dots on them.

The scanner can remove some of them, but not all.

This is just a few of them.

I managed to figure out how to scan slides on the Epson Perfection V500 scanner.

I did find that slide photos come out looking a little flat, sort of like a postcard.

(I also learned AFTER I scanned two years worth of slides that I should have been blowing the dust off the slides before I scanned them.)

Here's a scanned slide photo of Art and me in May of 1975 at the White House.  Tiffany would join our family in about 5 months. (I'm in the red and navy, striped t-shirt.)

And here's an old Niagara Falls slide from the same trip.  You can see where there's even more deterioration.  I'm glad I'm doing this now.  I don't know how quickly Hawaii's salt air will affect all the slides.

I'm afraid I haven't been able to visit everybody lately because the Cousins Party and scanning is taking up all my time.

My daughter asked what I'll do with my time when I'm done scanning.

Well... I'll have to add explanations to all the properties for each photo.  That will take a whole lot of time too.

What about after that?  Hmmmm... Maybe then I'll paint those doors I've been procrastinating over.

  1. I am exhausted just hearing about your daunting task but envious of what the final outcome will be.

  3. What a huge number of slides! I was thinking about getting a scanner but I only have a few I'd like to have, so I'll take them somewhere. Some day. :-)

  4. I see you think like me, lining up projects for the next few years. We must both have planning in our backgrounds? Aim high in steering is the way to go. Dianne

PS, I have been procratinating over slides. I wonder if any of them are good any more?

  5. I did this a few years ago, scanned tons of slides that belonged to my parents. It was worth every minute, and it took a lot of minutes (hours, days, weeks). I am so happy that I finished and they saw them. They brought back lots of memories.

  8. Maybe I'm glad I don't have many pictures to keep. I wonder though if I should learn to scan the few pictures I do have. I recently bought a cheap scanner for keeping my paperwork organized...didn't think I would need it to scan pictures. Probably need to get a higher quality scanner like your Epson.

The wonderful thing about looking at old photos...is to reminisce our youth lol Practically everyone in that photo are in their 60s (or older) today.

  9. This is a public service announcement. Thanks for the information on your project here. I have got to get busy on the same project. Thankfully, I have nowhere near the same amount of slides. I need to get a scanner like your Epson.

Hang in there. You are doing an awesome job.

  10. You are so much braver than I. My old machine is very noisy, and I am using that as an excuse not to finish my scanning. Yes, we too need double hand rails on our two stairs. I can't believe you don't have prints of some of your wonderful photographs up and down that stair well. Costco makes enlargements. :) If art wants projects, he could make frames.

The most useful crock pot recipe I have is that standard crock pot chicken: whole chicken, Peeled and quartered carrots, quartered onions, bay leaf, 1/4 cup water or wine: Cook on low 8 hours.

  11. You are doing so well. My husband gave me a slide scanner last year but it is still waiting in the box. I have many boxes to scan. I also read that when you download your digital photos onto a DVD disk, if it is a regular low-cost disk, the pictures will start to deteriorate in several years. You need to download your favorite digital pictures on a super DVD disk that is guaranteed to stay good for at least 50 years.

  14. What a huge job you have ahead of you! Tom has gone through a lot of old photos and slides and just scanned some of them. Many were not worth the effort.
